Google is rolling out a beta test for a new Google AdWords service. It’s called “Demographic Bidding.” The service is only going to useful to advertisers who use the content network because you’ll have to know, or have access to, demographic information about the users of the site. For instance, MySpace and Facebook, as well as other social media sites, ask for age and gender information on sign up. Dating sites are notorious for this. You can use that information to target a certain age group, only men, or one women, and also to exclude certain groups. If your product doesn’t sell well to 18-24 year olds then you can exclude them from your demographic bidding.
The demographic biddging concept has a lot of potential. I can see other pay per click companies going to that as well, and possibly even niche pay per click companies developed around the idea. Suppose you wanted to target specific types of products to a particular nationality – for instance, religious symbols or fashions that appeal to a particular regional caste. Then you could do that through demographic bidding.
Right now, the Google AdWords program is in beta. Social networking sites currently being targeted for the beta testing include:
