Not ready to launch your Pay Per Click campaign yet but you’d like to do some initial keyword research? Don’t worry. Google has a tool for you.
Google’s external keyword research tool allows you to type in your website’s URL and receive keyword suggestions based on your website’s content. You can type in the home page URL and put a check mark in the little box below that asks if you want to include other pages connected to that one. If you want to analyze your entire site then you can check that box, or you can just type in the exact URL of your landing page and analyze that page.
This tool can do two things for you. First, it can help you identify the right keywords to focus on for your website, and for your Pay Per Click campaigns. But it can also tell you whether your web pages are optimized enough.
For instance, type in the exact URL of your Pay Per Click landing page (don’t forget to select Website content as the method for generating keywords). After Google analyzes that web page, take a look at your keywords. Is there a keyword that you’d like to target that doesn’t appear on the list? If so then you need to re-optimize your web page to include that keyword.
Another way to use this tool that I recommend is to use the descriptive phrase method keyword research. Type in your phrase in the box and check “Use synonyms.” Synonyms can be useful in two ways – first, by giving you new words to optimize your landing pages and pay per click campaigns for, but also to help you find suitable words to add for semantic language optimization. This will prevent you from keyword stuffing your pages and give you words that you can substitute for keywords if your content is “over optimized.”
I highly recommend the Google Adwords External Keyword Tool. It acts the same way as the internal AdWords tool, but you don’t have to log into your AdWords account. You can look at the estimated average CPC of your keywords just like you can with the Google AdWords internal keyword tool.
