Every now and then I hear an idea so good that I wonder why no one else has thought of it. Today was such a day.
Over at the Search Engine Standard blog, David Rodnitzky wrote:
Attention Google: you need to create a Google Credit Card!
I envision a card that works something like this. First, for businesses: for every $100 you spend, you get $1 of AdWords credit. For every $100 you spend on AdWords, you get $3 AdWords credit, and if you link your credit card to your Google Checkout account, every $100 you spend via Google Checkout gets you $5 of AdWords credit.
Barring the silliness that followed, this is actually a pretty good idea. A Google credit card would encourage more AdWords spending and Google would get so far ahead in the search marketing arena that no one will ever catch them (as if they aren’t already). But think about the implications. Instead of making billions of dollars in AdWords revenue, the search marketing giant would start earning trillions, much of that in credit card interest.
But does Google want to be a bank? I don’t know, but I do know that if they had a credit card there would be people who’d sign up for one just for the free AdWords credit.
